Gaston College closes out Region 10 slate with winning record

In another rain-soaked weekend tournament, the Gaston College Rhinos' beach volleyball team split its Region 10 matches and finished 1-2 overall in three matches played in Pinehurst at Sandhills Community College.

Gaston College, coached by Rachel Noreika, defeated host Sandhills Community College 3-2 on Friday and losing to Richard Bland 4-1 on Friday and to four-year Catawba College 4-1 on Saturday.

The Rhinos are 7-15 overall and closed out their Region 10 schedule with a 5-3 record and losses only to Richard Bland.

The pairs of Naomi Hilliard and Maddie Dearing (21-11, 21-14), Valentina Rodriguez and Cristina Rotola (21-10, 21-14) and Milica Gavric and Bianca Bowland (21-18, 21-17) took victories in the opener.

And Rodriguez and Rotola were the lone winners in the losses to Richard Bland and Catawba.

That pair's three-match win streak ties a three-match win streak by the pair of Naomi Hilliard and Maddie Dearing earlier this season.

Gaston College returns to action on Tuesday in a noon doubleheader at four-year Tusculum University for the first of five straight matches against four-year schools as the Rhinos prepare for the April 20 Region 10 championship meet they host at their on-campus facility.
