Gaston College baseball adds four transfers to 2024 roster

Gaston College's baseball program has added four transfers to their program as they prepare to begin the 2024 season.

Rhinos head coach Shohn Doty's team has added sophomore outfielder Trent Murchison from Patrick & Henry Community College, freshman catcher Ethan McNally from James Madison University, freshman pitcher Jason Johnson from the Charlotte 49ers and freshman infielder Brandon Crabtree from N.C. State University.

Murchison, a 2022 Jacksonville, N.C., High graduate, hit .289 with one home run and 13 RBIs in 29 games for Patrick & Henry last spring.

McNally, a 2023 Archbishop Spalding High graduate from Severn, Md., was the No. 1 catcher and No. 16 overall player in the state of Maryland last spring.

Johnson, a 2023 Gaston Day School graduate from Charlotte, was the No. 49 right-handed pitcher and No. 146 overall player in the state of North Carolina last spring.

Crabtree, a 2023 Grace Christian School graduate from Pittsboro, was the No. 4 third baseman and No. 37 overall player in the state of North Carolina last spring. He also was second in the state last spring with 13 home runs.

Gaston College went 50-13 last year, was ranked as high as No. 6 in the NJCAA national polls and won the Region 10 and Eastern District titles to advance to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Col.

The Rhinos will open their season with a three-game home series at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park against Guilford Tech, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Jan. 27 and 1 p.m. single game on Jan. 28.
