Seven Rhinos named to All-Region 10 baseball with three taking top individual honors

Seven Gaston College baseball players have been honored on the All-Region 10 team for 2024 in a year in which the Rhinos became ranked No. 1 in the national polls for the first time.

Ben Karpowicz (outfield), Freddie Oliver (infield), Seth Christmas (catcher), Mason Smith (pitcher) and Landon Carr (pitcher) were named to the first team, Andrew Muraco (infield) to the second team and Karpowicz (outfield), Trent Murchison (outfield) and Muraco (second base) to the Golden Glove team.

Additionally, Smith was named Region 10 pitcher of the year, Carr relief pitcher of the year and Karpowicz defensive player of the year.

Karpowicz, sophomore from Elgin, Ill., a 2022 South Elgin High graduate and Illinois State transfer, hit .367 with 11 home runs, 64 RBIs and 9 stolen bases in the regular season.

Oliver, a sophomore from Durham and a 2022 Northern Durham High graduate, hit .377 with 13 home runs, 54 RBIs and 27 stolen bases.

Christmas, a sophomore from Charlotte and a 2022 Hopewell High graduate, hit .388 with 12 home runs, 70 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.

Smith, a freshman from Denver, a 2022 Lincoln Charter graduate and East Carolina transfer, had a 9-0 record with a 3.03 ERA.

Carr, a sophomore from Waxhaw and a 2022 Cuthbertson High graduate, had a 6-1 record with four saves and a 1.98 ERA.

Muraco, a sophomore from Murrysville, Pa., a 2021 Franklin Regional High graduate and Coastal Carolina transfer, hit .381 with seven home runs, 47 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

And Murchison, a sophomore from Jacksonville, N.C., a 2022 Jacksonville High graduate and Patrick & Henry Community College transfer, hit .344 with 33 RBIs and 51 stolen bases.

Thirteen Gaston College players have already signed or committed to four-year colleges for next season - Carr (Campbell), Christmas (Liberty), Calvert Clark (Appalachian State), Caleb Estes (Charlotte), Karpowicz (Campbell), Trevor Lucas (UNC Wilmington), Muraco (Old Dominion), Wagner Morrissette (Iowa), Oliver (North Carolina A&T), Smith (Campbell), Evan Vandenbosch (Georgia Southern) and Isaac Williams (Elon). And several others are likely to make commitments in the coming weeks.
