Poor shooting dooms Gaston College in Region 10 opener

Gaston College misfired early and often in Thursday's Region 10 opener at Spartanburg Methodist.

The end result was a 93-48 loss that drops the Rhinos to 6-8 on the season.

Gaston College actually led 7-6 with 12:14 left in the opening half before shooting woes ended any chance of a win at the Region 10's oldest member.

Spartanburg Methodist, which has been in Region 10 since 1946 but is departing to become a four-year school at the end of this year, outscored the Rhinos 28-17 the rest of the first half.

And when Gaston College's shooting woes continued in the second half, the Pioneers (10-4, 1-0) led them to a comfortable win their Region 10 opener.

"Game One didn't work out the way we thought," interim Gaston College head coach Jermaine Williams said. "The score isn't indicative of where we were in the game.
"The championship wasn't won or lost tonight. We were there. In my opinion, we left unfinished plays in that first five minutes that would've changed a good bit of how the game played out."

The Rhinos missed 26 of its first 30 field goals overall and their first seven 3-pointers. For the game, Gaston College missed 39 of 53 shots for a 26.4 percent overall mark and missed 15 of 19 3-pointers for 21.1 percent.

No Gaston College player reached double figures as four players shared scoring honors with six points each - Yarayah Evans, Ajaden Gray, Tyheim Love and Jaeshaun Murchison.

Michael Smith and Jalante Edwards shared team rebounding honors with six each.

The Rhinos return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. against Brunswick Community College at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School.

"I take blame on the loss," Williams said. "I will do my best to have the guys ready for Sunday. It's a journey and we're trying to get things corrected as soon as possible. That score looks bad but we're better than what the score shows. Game Two is Sunday. We'll be ready."
