Top moments of 2024-25: No. 10 - Basketball gets first 20-win season since 1972
Before Gaston College restarted its athletic program before the 2021-22 school year, the school had a rich basketball tradition that included four straight 20-win seasons before the program was dropped after the 1971-72 season.
This season, the program's fourth since the restart, a 17-game winning streak put the program in strong position to match that feat.
But they really had to earn it.
The Rhinos literally worked overtime to reach the milestone and did so by handing USC Salkehatchie its only home defeat of the season.
Trailing by seven in each half, the Rhinos rallied to take the 125-119 overtime that is the second-highest scoring game in school history.
Sophomores Judah Ravenell (30 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists) and Jordan Brown (25 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists) led Gaston College in a game in which it trailed 106-99 with 2:03 left in regulation before scoring the final seven points to force overtime.
"Judah and Jordan played like you have to have out of your sophomores if you're going to win on the road like this," Moss said. "We got a big defensive stop at the end of regulation and we got stops and rebounded well in the overtime."
Ryan Evans (18 points, 4 rebounds), Kyhree McAlister (15 points, 7 rebounds) and E.J. Joyner (12 points, 7 assists) were other standouts for the Rhinos in the victory.
