Gaston College defends Region 10 softball title starting on Thursday in Sumter, S.C.

Gaston College begins its Region 10 softball title defense on Thursday when the three-day Region 10 tournament begins at Patriot Park in Sumter, S.C.

The Rhinos, who have received votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll for eight of the last nine weeks, are the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Gaston College will take a 47-7 overall record and 14-2 league mark when it plays its first tournament game on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

The two-time defending Region 10 regular season champion will the winner of the No. 3 seed Monroe, N.Y.- No. 5 seed USC Union 11 a.m. contest. Monroe (23-26), the only team in Region 15, was the Region 10 tournament runner-up to Gaston College last season and the Rhinos swept the Mustangs in a Feb. 23 doubleheader. And USC Union (19-24, 6-10) finished fifth in the Region 10 regular season race.

Other Thursday opening round pairings have No. 4 seed Spartanburg Methodist (10-22, 7-9) facing No. 6 seed USC Sumter (6-29, 1-15) at 11 a.m. and the winner of that game meeting No. 2 seed Florence-Darlington Tech (29-12, 12-4) on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Gaston College won the 2023 Region 10 title in its first-ever postseason softball games last season as part of its path to a historic NJCAA World Series appearance.

This season, the Region 10 tournament winner advances to the Mid-Atlantic district best-of-three series May 8-10 at the winner of the Region 17 tournament. The Mid-Atlantic champion then advances to the 20-team World Series hosted May 20-25 in Oxford, Ala.
