Rhinos open 2022-23 cross country season

Gaston College's women's cross country team opened the 2022-23 athletic season by competing in the Fleet Feet Invitational at Catawba College.

Under new coach Kody Kubbs, the Rhinos also notched their first team score in school history in the event in which Gaston College's 6-person National Junior College Athletic Association team ran against NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II competition.

Victoria Perez and Rein Norton-Small, returnees from Gaston College's inaugural 2021 team, led the Rhinos on Saturday with individual finishes of 85th and 105th, respectively.

Freshman runners Stefani Vergara-Delgado (109th), Audrey Krupa (118th), Andrea Ortiz (119th) and Leah Treat (121st) rounded out Gaston College's individual finishers. The school has to have five runners to get a team score.

"I'm super proud of the ladies for this accomplishment," said Kubbs, whose team next competes on Sept. 17 in the Converse Kick-Off in Spartanburg, S.C.. "The ladies ran really well today against some top level competition.

"The course was a fairly challenging course but our ladies preparation and dedication really showed through. These ladies are working incredibly hard every day and making huge gains. We are excited that the season is finally underway. They felt good about today and are excited to get back to work after the holiday weekend."
