Gaston College stays unbeaten with sweep at Southwest Virginia

Gaston College's unbeaten baseball season continued with Saturday's doubleheader sweep of National Junior College Athletic Association Region 10 Division II rival Southwest Virginia.

The Rhinos improved to 17-0 overall and 11-0 in Region 10 with an 11-0, 5-inning win in the opener and a 14-4, 6-inning victory in the nightcap.

"I was really happy with how we went about our business today," said Gaston College coach Shohn Doty, whose team received the first national ranking in school history earlier in the week.

The Rhinos, ranked No. 8 in the www.thejbb.net poll based out of Grand Junction, Col., scored in 10 of their 11 innings and got solid starting pitching in each game.

Konni Durschlag had six hits, seven RBIs, two doubles, a triple and two home runs and Chandler Riley had six hits, five RBIs, two doubles and a home run to lead Gaston College's 25-run, 30-hit offense in Saturday's two games.

Other top offensive efforts came from Ahmir Cournier (four hits, two RBIs), J.D. Yakubinis (three hits, four RBIs), Wade Kelly (three hits, two RBIs, home run) and Hayden Brandon (two for two, triple).

Gus Hughes improved to 2-0 with a five-inning, eight-strikeout, three-hit shutout in the opener and J.D. Everett improved to 3-0 with five innings and eight strikeouts in the nightcap in which David Sande finished up with one inning of relief.

"The guys came out and played really well," Doty said. "Gus had his second straight really good outing and J.D. did his job, too. We scored in just about every inning and put a lot of pressure on them. It was really a workmanlike effort."

Gaston College seeks its fourth straight Region 10 series sweep when it completes the series at noon on Sunday at Southwest Virginia.
