Gaston College rolls to win over Patrick & Henry
A week after needing a walkoff home run for a comeback home victory over Patrick & Henry Community College, Gaston College rolled to a much more comfortable 15-6 road victory on Tuesday afternoon.
The nationally-ranked Rhinos improved to 33-5 on the season with victory after scoring four runs in the first and second innings and putting the game away with a six-run sixth.
"Offensively, we were pretty dynamic," said Gaston College coach Shohn Doty, whose team is ranked No. 17 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll and No. 10 in thejbb.net poll and No. 12 in the Dream Big Athletics poll. "Those four runs in the first set the tone. We got a chance to play a lot of guys. We played well defensively and I thought we pitched it good."
The Rhinos had 13 hits and took advantage of 11 walks and two Patriots' fielding errors.
Six Gaston College pitchers got in work on Tuesday with starter Jaxson Mangum getting credit for the win after 3 2-3 innings.
The Rhinos coaxed bases-loaded walks in three of the innings in which they scored and also got four multi-run hits.
In the first inning, Trey Truitt drew a bases-loaded walk to begin the scoring and Preston Hall added a 2-run single and Seth Christmas a RBI single.
In the second, J.D. Yakubinis drew a bases-loaded walk, Wade Kelly scored on a wild pitch and Truitt added a 2-run single.
After Patrick & Henry closed within 8-5 after four innings, Gaston College put the game away in the sixth.
That's when Adam Quintero had a 2-run single, Truitt a 2-run double, Hall a RBI single and Christmas a sacrifice fly.
The Rhinos' final run came in the eight when Miller St. John drew a bases-loaded walk.
Quintero (3 hits, 2 RBIs), Konni Durschlag (2 hits), Truitt (2 hits, 5 RBIs), Hall (2 hits, 3 RBIs) and St. John (1 hit, 3 walks, 1 RBI) led the Gaston College offense.
The Rhinos return to action this weekend with a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader and 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park against USC Union.
