Gaston College rolls to big road win at Caldwell Tech

After a disappointing weekend against perennial power Walters State, No. 14 Gaston College got untracked with a 12-3 win over Caldwell Tech at Lenoir's Walker Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rhinos' victory was shortened to eight innings due to the mercy rule.

"We swung the bat well," Gaston College coach Shohn Doty said. "We showed what we had the ability to do and showed that we had a lot left in the tank.
"After the game, we talked about we know we've still got to keep working."

Sam Dansky and Daniel Parris had four hits apiece and combined to drive in seven of the Rhinos' 12 runs.

"Daniel and Sam hit 5 and 6 in the order and really had big days for us," Doty said of Dansky (4 hits, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs) and Parris (4 hits, double, home run, 2 RBIs).

On the mound, three relievers - Terry Kaler, Jake McCoy and Alex Sobol - combined to strike out 12 batters in six innings of work.

"Those guys coming out of the pen were all really good," Doty said.

McCoy was credited with the victory after his three-inning effort.

Other standouts for the 17-hit offense were Joey Nicholson (home run, 3 RBIs), Nick Martinez (2 hits) and Ty Corbin (2 hits).

Gaston College returns to action with back-to-back 1 p.m. doubleheaders against nearby Catawba Valley Community College - on Saturday at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park and on Sunday at Hickory's Henkel-Alley Field.

The Rhinos (1-3-1) hold an 8-2 all-time series advantage that includes five straight victories.

"They're playing well," Doty said of CVCC, which is 4-0 entering Wednesday's game at USC Sumter. "It's a bit of a rivalry game and I know they'll be ready to go."
