Gaston College offense leads the way in win over Wake Tech
Gaston College's baseball team rolled past Wake Tech 11-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park by the mercy rule.
The Rhinos improved to 12-5-1 as Sam Dansky powered a 10-hit offense with two home runs, including a walkoff three-run home run in the seventh inning.
Joey Nicholson also homered and led the offense with three hits. Other hitting standouts were Holden Cooper (2 hits, double, 1 RBI), Koy Swanson (1 hits, 2 RBIs) and David Nicks (double).
The offense scored in six of seven innings in support of starter and winner Daniel Parris (3 innings, 4 strikeouts) and five relievers who combined on a seven-hitter.
"I thought it was a good response to what was obviously a tough end to the weekend," said Gaston College coach Shohn Doty, whose team was coming off a two games to one three-game series loss to No. 17 Florence Darlington Tech in its Region 10 Division I league games. "Holder Cooper gave us a spark, played outstanding defense at second base and had a couple of hits as well.
"And I can't say enough about Joey Nicholson with the numbers he's putting up. So the offense was good and I thought Parris was good with three really good innings. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good day."
Gaston College returns to Region 10 Division I league action this weekend with a three-game series at USC Sumter the begins with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader and concludes with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
