Gaston College rolls past Wake Tech in mid-week non-league game
Gaston College's baseball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 12-0, 5-inning win over Wake Tech at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory improved the Rhinos to 15-6-1 overall.
"I felt we did a good job putting the ball in play consistently, we played better defensively and got to run four guys to the mound and they were all super efficient," Gaston College coach Shohn Doty said. "We had 48 pitches in five innings which means we were throwing strikes.
"That's a recipe for success for us."
Koy Swanson (3 hits, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs), Jackson Toberman (2 hits, 1 RBI), Sam Dansky (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Brandon Crabtree (double, 2 RBIs), Daniel Parris (1 hit, 2 RBIs), Chris Hendrickson (double), Trey Markham (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Isaac Armstrong (1 hit) led the Rhinos' 12-hit offense that was highlighted by a nine-run fifth inning.
On the mound, starter and winner Drake Purvis (2 innings) and relievers Jake Young (1 inning), Tucker Holland (1 inning) and Clayton Sherwood (1 inning) combined on the three-hitter.
Gaston College returns to action this weekend its first Region 10 home series. The Rhinos host USC Union in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park. The Bantams (17-1, 5-1) are atop the Region 10 standings after the first three weekends of the year.
"Union is coming in here red hot at 17-1 and 5-1 in the league," Doty said. "We haven't had a home league series this year so we're happy to be at home against a team that's leading the conference. It's a great opportunity for us."
