Gaston College "road warriors" win again in Region 10

Gaston College continues to be "road warriors" in Region 10 after the Rhinos picked up their third league road victory of the season in Wednesday night's defensive-minded 52-47 win at Richard Bland.

Gaston College (12-7, 3-3) is 3-0 this year in league road games with previous victories at Cape Fear Community College and Spartanburg Methodist.

In Wednesday's win, the Rhinos' defense was the difference as it limited the host Statesmen to 27.7 percent field goal shooting while forcing 24 turnovers.

"We are extremely happy with the win considering we didn't score the ball very well at all," Gaston College coach David "Dickey" Nutt said. "But anytime you can go on the road and win, it makes it good.  Kalil Camara was our difference-maker tonight. A lot of his work will not go on a stat sheet but trust us when I say he was the spark. He played very well. I thought our defense was the reason we were able to win."

Damon Davis (15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals), Camara (8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), Jaylen Bates (7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals), DaMarco Watson (7 points, 3 rebounds), Dedrick Givens (4 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block) and Zavion Jackson (2 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block) led a balanced attack for the Rhinos.

Gaston College's defense helped it overcome a 32.7 percent shooting night.

"I told our guys, some nights it is just going to feel like there is a lid on the basket," Nutt said. "Your defense has to prevail. Damon was good for us again with some timely steals and easy buckets. Da'marco hit some key free throws to ice the game. This is a hard place to play and I'm very proud of our guys."

The Rhinos return to action on Feb. 1 at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute.
