Gaston College wins 7th straight game on Sunday afternoon
Gaston College's basketball winning streak reached seven straight games after Sunday's 95-46 victory over the Catawba College developmental team at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School.
The Rhinos improved to 7-1 on the season behind another balanced attack.
Freshman Spencer Breeden (16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals), sophomore Jordan Brown (12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists), sophomore Tyheim Love (12 points, 4 rebounds), sophomore Judah Ravenell (11 points, 6 rebounds), freshman E.J. Joyner (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), freshman J.R. Watson (10 points, 5 rebounds), freshman Jozohn Price (6 points, 8 rebounds), freshman Landon Sprouse (6 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) and freshman Ryan Evans (5 points, 3 rebounds) led Gaston College.
The Rhinos never trailed, roared ahead 23-5 with 11:57 left in the opening half and the lead grew to 31 points (41-10) at the 5:34 mark, was 52-22 at the halftime led by as many as 48 at 87-39 with 2:35 to play.
"In a game like this, the thing you want to see is good habits," said first-year Gaston College head coach Benny Moss, whose team's only loss was by an 89-83 score at No. 1-ranked Davidson-Davie Community College. "You don't want to start playing the score and I thought we did a pretty good job with that. We locked in and we continued to defend and share the basketball and not take selfish shots.
"It was an overall good team win."
Gaston College returns to action next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Patrick & Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va. The Rhinos beat the Patriots for their first win of the season 92-59 on Nov. 6.
"We've got to have major focus in practice the next few days," Moss said. "We won by 33 but it was a game where we were up by three at halftime and with about 10 minutes to play, we were up 10. We kind of put it away in the last 10 minutes.
"But this time it's a road game. They are 4-2 and they're only losses were at our place and at Davidson-Davie. So we know we've got a formidable team to play and we'll be travelling and it's always hard to win on the road."
Gaston College stays on the road for two more games - Dec. 4 at the Pfeiffer junior varsity and Dec. 8 at the Newberry junior varsity - before closing out the first semester scheduled with a 2 p.m. Dec. 15 home game against Cleveland Community College at Ashbrook and a Dec. 18 game at Virginia Peninsula Community College.
