Gaston College takes Region 10 road win to improve to 18-3 on the year
Facing three-time defending Region 10 Division I regular season champion Caldwell Tech on its homecourt while playing its fourth game in seven days was a daunting challenge for Gaston College's basketball program.
But the Rhinos used a strong closing kick to win their first road game at Caldwell Tech by a 94-82 score on Tuesday night.
"We finished strong and we played more consistent," said Gaston College coach Benny Moss, whose team improved to 18-3 overall and 4-2 in Region 10. "I thought our defense and our offensive execution were a little bit better. We came on the road and did the things we needed to do to win."
Judah Ravenell had 26 points, Jordan Brown 24, Tyheim Love and E.J. Joyner 14 apiece and Landon Sprouse seven to lead a balanced Rhinos' attack.
Gaston College led 45-38 at halftime before the host Cobras forged a 61-59 lead with 10:27 to play.
The Rhinos responded by closing out the game on a 35-21 surge.
"We made a conscious effort on offense to touch the paint by dribble or pass," Moss said. "I thought Judah did a good job in the paint off the pass and Jordan and E.J. and Tyheim did a good job getting to the paint off the dribble."
Gaston College stays on the road two more games before returning home. The Rhinos visit Cape Fear Community College on Saturday 3 p.m. and Wake Tech on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. before their next home game on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. against Brunswick Community College at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School.
"We had three games in four days and now we just finished with four games in seven days," Moss said. "So it's good to get this game under our belt and go back and do some video work, get in the gym, get some shots up and focus on some details. We really haven't had much time to get in the gym because we've just been playing games."
