No. 13 Gaston College improves to 39-3 with DH sweep
Gaston College's No. 13-ranked softball team improved its record to 39-3 with another Region 10 Division I doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park.
The Rhinos (8-0 in Region 10 Division I) won 20-0 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings as Savanna Mullins and Kristyn Ezzo threw back-to-back two-hitters in a pair of games shortened by the "mercy" rule.
"I think we came back after this long stretch off and have tried to make our practices more intense," said Gaston College coach Mike Steuerwald, whose team was playing for the first time since March 23. "From our end, we're finding ways to keep us with an edge when you're run-ruling teams in so many games.
"Our group has done a really good with that for the most part."
Mullins struck out three and Ezzo six in their complete game efforts.
Sarah Johnson (5 hits, 2 doubles, 7 RBIs), Skye Harrington (4 hits, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 4 RBIs), Grace Kealy (3 hits, 2 home runs, 2 RBIs), Alayna Patrick (3 hits, double, home run, 3 RBIs), Savanna Price (3 hits, double, 2 RBIs), Kendall Bradshaw (2 hits, triple, 3 RBIs), Katelyn Brandon (2 hits, double, 1 RBI), McKenna Jones (2 hits, 1 RBI), Mary Hinson (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Arissa Duff (2 hits, 1 RBI) led Gaston College's 29-hit offensive attack.
The Rhinos return to action on Thursday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Surry Community College. Gaston College's next home game at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park is Sunday's 1 p.m. Region 10 Division I doubleheader against Florence Darlington Tech when the Rhinos will host "Sophomore Day."
