No. 13 Gaston College picks up two more wins to extend winning streak to 20

No. 13 Gaston College dodged rain drops enough to pick up two more victories on Wednesday and Thursday while increasing their school-record winning streak to 20 games.

The Rhinos improved to 53-3 overall and 20-0 in Region 10 Division I action by completing Wednesday's suspended game for a 13-0 victory on Thursday morning before winning 9-0 in what was to be the first game of a doubleheader.

In Thursday's nightcap, Gaston College ahead 11-0 in the top of the third inning before a lightning delay and eventually a rainstorm stopped the game.

And since the regular season ends on Sunday, the nightcap of the doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday will be canceled.

"We've been doing a great job pitching," Rhinos head coach Mike Steuerwald said. "All three of them did well with (Kristyn) Ezzo and (Savanna) Mullins getting shutouts the last two days and Brew (Abigail Brewton) had thrown two shutout innings before the third game was called."

Ezzo threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts and Mullins a one-hitter with two strikeouts in the wins that were supported by a 19-hit offense over the course of the 10 innings of action.

Katelyn Brandon (3 doubles, 3 RBIs), Sarah Johnson (3 hits, 1 RBI), Skye Harrington (2 doubles, 4 RBIs), Mullins (double, triple, 2 RBIs), Mary Hinson (2 hits, triple, 3 RBIs), McKenna Jones (2 hits), Kendall Bradshaw (home run, 1 RBI), Alayna Patrick (double, 1 RBI), Phoebe Cole (1 hit, 1 RBI), Savanna Price (double) and Chloe Young (double) led the Gaston College offense.

Gaston College pursues a pair of Region 10 Division I records when it closes its regular season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Florence Darlington Tech on Sunday.

A sweep would give the Rhinos the first unbeaten Region 10 Division I regular season since Spartanburg Methodist went 19-0 in 2016. Additionally, two victories would allow Gaston College to tie the same Spartanburg Methodist team for overall victories; The 2016 Pioneers finished 55-11 and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.
